Travel Diary: Saint Lucia

a home away from home

After one of the most challenging years of my life, a spontaneous DM to an old friend from college sparked an adventure I didn’t know I needed. St. Lucia became a place of healing, connection, and inspiration—far beyond a simple vacation. This trip transformed me, reminding me of the beauty in stepping outside your comfort zone and reconnecting with yourself.

If you’re on the fence about visiting this Caribbean gem, let me take you through my unforgettable experience—from breathtaking views to life-changing moments. You might just find yourself booking the next flight.

At the end of 2020, one of the most chaotic years we’ve all faced, my friend suggested we take a trip together for New Year’s. I was coming out of a tough period and desperately needed a change of scenery. I knew this trip would be different—more meaningful. Although I had visited St. Lucia briefly on a cruise before, those four hours docked at the port didn’t do this beautiful island justice.

Where We Stayed

We stayed at an incredible Airbnb hosted by Janus, who treated us like family from the moment we landed. His team greeted us at the airport, made a quick grocery stop, and brought us to the most stunning 2BR/2BA villa, complete with an infinity pool overlooking the Piton Mountains. Every detail of the villa was designed for relaxation and inspiration, and I was in my element for creating content.

Both bedrooms had equally breathtaking views and luxurious rain showers, so there was no awkward room selection. During our stay, Janus even gave us a tour of his nearby properties, each with its own unique design but offering the same level of comfort and care. It felt like a home away from home, with the perfect balance of privacy and hospitality.

Exploring St. Lucia: Food & Things to Do

Day 2: We began with a hike at the Tet Paul Nature Trail near Soufriere, which cost only $10 and included a guide who shared some interesting details about the local vegetation. The views of neighboring islands, St. Vincent and Martinique, were breathtaking. Afterward, we enjoyed Saltfish and St. Lucian Coffee at Zaka Art Cafe before heading to the beach to soak in some Vitamin D. We ended the day with a New Year’s Eve dinner at The Mango Tree Restaurant, where we enjoyed a delicious 6-course meal for just $125 for two.

Day 3: The morning was spent lounging by the pool, but the highlight of the day was a private boat tour arranged by Janus. It was pure magic—music, food, drinks, and the most stunning sunset over the water. For the first time since the chaos of 2020, I felt at peace, listening to "Blue Dream" by Jhene Aiko as the world seemed to slow down around me.

Day 4: We visited the Toraille Waterfall and Sulphur Springs for a mud bath, which is known for its natural healing properties. Afterward, we enjoyed rum punch on the beach at sunset before heading back to the villa for a special dinner prepared by Janus' father, a talented private chef. We spent the evening laughing and chatting with Janus and his family, ending the night with milk punch and warm conversation.

On our final morning, I woke up early to capture the sunrise, feeling grateful for the peace I had found. While wandering the villa grounds, I stumbled upon some goats and ended up chatting with a local about everything from nature to the 2020 US election. It was a reminder of how interconnected we all are, even from different corners of the world. As we headed to the airport, Janus’ brother made a final stop at a local fruit stand for fresh coconuts, which was the perfect farewell to an unforgettable trip.

St. Lucia isn’t just a place to visit—it’s a place to reconnect, reset, and rediscover joy. If you’re thinking about making the trip, I promise you’ll be welcomed with open arms, and like me, you might never want to leave.
