Hands down the best birthday trip I’ve ever been on

Read Time: 2 min

Getting There

I went with my cousin and sister on this trip. We flew with Delta Air Lines from JFK to LIS (Lisbon Portela Airport). It usually is a 7-hour flight, but we arrived within 5. I reserved a rental car with Sixt, and we drove two hours to Algarve. You can opt to take the train, but we wanted to get a chance to explore the area before we checked in at the hotel.

Airports: Faro Airport (45 mins by car), Lisbon Portella Airport (2 hours by car),

Transport: Rental cars, Alfa Pendular Train ( twice a day from Lisbon to Faro in 3 hours)

Money: Euros ( Recommend taking cash out before arriving )

Where To Stay

Checked In: April 9 Checked Out: April 12

We stayed at the Tivoli Carvoeiro Hotel, and it has the most breathtaking views overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. I stumbled upon this beautiful hidden gem situated on the Vale Covo Cliffside when I was looking for a place to go for my 24th birthday. Everything looked better than I imagined, and the hotel staff was so gracious and attentive. We stayed in the junior suite with sea views. The room had a panoramic view of the coast with a balcony and jacuzzi. It also had a glass walk-in shower with double rainfall showerheads. We were escorted to the room, and within minutes of putting our stuff down, one of the staff members arrived at the door with a cart of champagne, fruit, and dessert. I had mentioned I would be celebrating my birthday, but I didn't expect to receive wine and fruit daily. I honestly felt like I was Beyonce the whole trip, lol, but hey, that's how it's supposed to be on your special day. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Where To Eat

Portugal has a vibrant culinary scene known for its fresh fish, seafood, and wine. After getting settled in our room, we went to the concierge to ask for restaurant recommendations. They suggested we go to a restaurant called O PESCADOR BENAGIL. It was a short drive from the hotel and was situated on a cliff with incredible beach views. As we walked in, there is an ice chest with the catch of the day displayed. We sat down, ordered wine, and ate fresh bread & olives. Then our server, Pedro, came to give us a walkthrough of the available fish options. He highly recommended the stone bass, so that is what we ordered for the table, along with basmati rice, grilled vegetables, and whipped potatoes infused with truffles sent from God himself. The food was incredible, and my tastebuds were on cloud 9. We ate at several other restaurants in town during our stay, and none of them disappointed. Portugal's food has taken my appreciation for food to a whole different level. This is a foodie's dream.

What To Do

The main attraction in Algarve is the beautiful sandy beaches surrounded by natural red rock formed cliffs and caves. There are many picturesque beaches, and you can even find secluded beaches if you aren't a fan of crowds. We took advantage of a boat tour excursion serviced by the hotel. It was a great way to get up close to the Benagil caves and learn Portugal's history. We even stopped for a quick swim, and your girl jumped off the boat into 50-degree freezing water, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity. You can also hike up the cliffs to get better views of the sea and surrounding hotels. The cliffs are a perfect place to set up a picnic and experience a magical sunset. If you are looking for your next vacation spot, I urge you to visit Algarve, Portugal; you won't be disappointed.
